Back to School Edition: Reminders for Student Athletes

Things I want my student athlete to remember….

As the school year kicks off, I want to share some key pieces of advice with all the amazing student-athletes out there, including my own!  Here are the top things to keep in mind:

Your Worth Isn’t Measured by Wins and Losses

Your value goes far beyond the scoreboard. Celebrate your victories, but remember that how you handle challenges, interact with others, and maintain your integrity are what truly define you.

Take Care of Your Body and Mind

Your body and mind are your greatest assets as an athlete. Prioritize rest, nutrition, and hydration. Pay attention to your body’s signals and practice being in tune with what it needs—whether it’s physical recovery or mental relaxation. Don’t hesitate to reach out for support when you need it. Remember, taking care of your mental health is just as important as your physical health.

Balance is Key

Academics are just as important as athletics. Find a balance that works for you, allowing time for studies, sports, and self-care. The skills you develop in managing your time will serve you well both on and off the field.

Choose Your Environment Wisely

Surround yourself with people who support your growth—teammates, friends, and mentors who inspire and uplift you. Being in a positive environment helps you stay focused on your goals and keeps you resilient in the face of challenges.

Lead with Compassion

As an athlete, you have the opportunity to be a leader.  Lead by example with kindness and understanding, knowing that true leadership comes from helping others succeed alongside you.

Embrace Your Emotions

It’s normal to feel a range of emotions—excitement, frustration, pride, and even anxiety. Allow yourself to experience these feelings without judgment. Recognize that emotions are a natural part of being human, and they provide valuable information if you listen.

Learn from Every Experience

Every situation, whether it’s a tough loss or a personal triumph, offers a chance to learn and grow. Approach each experience with curiosity and an open mind, knowing that even challenges contribute to your personal development.

Stay Connected to Joy

Remember why you started playing sports in the first place—because it’s fun and it brings you joy! Keep that sense of joy alive, even in the toughest moments. Allow yourself to find pleasure in the process, not just the outcome.

Set Intentions, Not Just Goals

While goals are important, setting intentions for how you want to approach each day, practice, and game can be just as powerful. Focus on the process, stay present, and celebrate the small wins along the way.

Know What You Deserve from Your Coach

A good coach should support you, challenge you in a healthy way, and help you grow both as an athlete and a person. You deserve to feel respected, safe, and valued on your team. If something feels unfair or your coach’s behavior makes you uncomfortable, trust your instincts. It’s important to speak up—whether it’s talking to a trusted adult, a parent, or another coach. Remember, no one should ever make you feel less than or unsafe, and you have the right to advocate for yourself.

Don’t Let the Voice of Criticism Live in Your Head Rent-Free

It’s easy to be your own harshest critic, but remember that negative thoughts don’t have to take up space in your mind. Challenge self-doubt and replace it with self-compassion. Treat yourself with the kindness you would offer a friend, and don’t be afraid to seek support from others to help quiet that inner critic.

Trust Yourself

Trust in your abilities and your preparation. Stay grounded in who you are and what you bring to the table. Believe that you have the inner strength to handle whatever comes your way and that you are capable of navigating life’s challenges with resilience.

Play hard and have fun!
